RECENT MEETING – Unusual Vegetables
No meeting was held during the month of January. At the February Meeting, Chair, Pauline Gale welcomed members to a new year. The subject for the month was UNUSUAL VEGETABLES. The speaker, Mike Day was raised on a vegetable growing farm, and worked at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany for 42 years. He is now on the RHS vegetable panel. Raised on a vegetable farm, Mike Day worked at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany for 42 years and is now a member of the RHS Vegetable Trials Panel and RHS Trials Advisory Committee. Mike used colourful slides to illustrate the ways in which our common vegetables have evolved and developed over the years. Different colours have different properties in terms of nutrients, some absorbing more easily when eaten cooked rather than raw. From carrots to cabbage, lettuce to stir fries and unusual oriental vegetables, Mike’s message was ‘be adventurous with vegetables, whether shopping, eating or growing’. Cultivation suggestions followed during the Q&A.
