St. Peters Church and Community Hub

In the middle of Littlebury Green sits St. Peter’s, a Victorian tin tabernacle. It was built as a “Chapel of Ease” in 1885 so that the farming community did not have to walk the two miles to the parish church in Littlebury. The project was the inspiration of Revd. Cyril Wix, curate of Holy Trinity Church Littlebury. Construction took less than 6 months from a flat-pack supplied by Messrs. C. Keffer of London.

The building has been highly acclaimed by the Victorian Society as it is “substantially intact and retains most of its original fittings, unlike the majority of tin tabernacles that have been lost, substantially altered or no longer serve as churches.”

The green painted corrugated iron exterior is original though the roof has been replaced.  The interior is lined with the original tongue and groove boards. The stained glass windows are transfers between two panes of glass though some have been replaced.   Other fixtures such as the altar rail, font, pews, vicar’s prayer desk and pictures of the Stations of the Cross are original.

The church has been in use continuously since it was consecrated and is licensed for baptisms, weddings and funerals. It remains a place of worship but has been adapted to allow dual use as a Community Hub.  The pews have been modified so that they can be moved to the side to create an open space. In 2023 and 2024 with the help of volunteers, grants and a major fund raising campaign the store cupboard was converted into an accessible WC and the vestry was converted to a modern kitchen. Up to date energy efficient heating and lighting were installed.

The current pattern of services is;

1st Sunday of month      10.30 am          Holy Communion

4th Sunday of month      10.30 am          Morning Worship
