The oriental links and rituals lend the game of Mah Jong an air of mystique. The game became popular in the West in the 1920’s but was developed in China much earlier. “ Mah Jong may not be as cerebral as chess, as easy as backgammon or chancy as poker, but no other game uses such beautiful equipment and in its present form the game is most closely linked to rummy” (British Mah Jong Association). The rudiments of play are surprisingly easy to master and it is not unusual for a beginner to do quite well.
