Fifteen members visited the RHS gardens at Hyde Hall, near Chelmsford on September 7th. We were met at the Global Growth Vegetable Garden by Matt Oliver, the head gardener for that section, who told us about the planning & construction of the garden which opened in summer 2017.
He explained that the vegetable garden is unusual, being circular in shape with an octagonal glasshouse as a feature in the centre. The garden is divided in to four quadrants, each representing an area of the world:- Europe & the Middle East, South America, Asia and the Americas, and is predominantly an educational resource, although the produce is used in the restaurant.
We then had a guided tour of the garden, seeing many unusual vegetables and other edibles including dahlias & cannas! After two hours, which sped past, we finished our tour in the glasshouse and were then able to spend the rest of the day enjoying other parts of the lovely garden.
