Historic England (HE) announced on 11 December that St Peter’s Church and Community Hub in Littlebury Green had been designated as a Grade 2 listed building. It was included in a group of 19 “remarkable historic places” highlighted from all the buildings they listed in 2025. They described it as “a well-preserved Victorian Tin Tabernacle, a once-common but now increasingly rare type of pre-fabricated church”, which is “highly unusual in surviving on its original site and retaining the majority of its original fabric”. It is “a rare Victorian gem of corrugated iron, faith and rural ingenuity”.
The announcement attracted significant media interest, with BBC Radio 4’s PM programme including a brief description of the building by Team Vicar Revd Ella Harris.
Historic England also noted that the installation of modern WC, kitchen, heating and lighting facilities in 2023-24 had not affected the integrity or character of the building. With these modern facilities St Peter’s is now an actively used dual purpose building for both Church and community social activities.
